It’s best not to use Normal Cleanup on SSDs, it’s all explained in the article.

Comment on The Surprising Facts About TV Licenses by Alan https://davescomputertips.com/the-surprising-facts-about-tv-licenses/#comment-179280 Sat, 09 May 2026 13:39:49 +0000 https://davescomputertips.com/?p=152129#comment-179280 Here in Sweden we now have The Public Service Fee which replaced the TV licence back in 2019. It is basically the same as a TV licence with just a little twist, everybody over the age of 18 and is registered for tax (i.e. working) pays it wether you have a tv or not. It has a maximum annual cost of 1,184 Swedish Kroner – about 117 USD or 88GBP. It is taken out of your pay with your tax deduction. It is adjusted for those on a lower income and those that are over the age of 65 – i.e. a pensionair will pay 1% of their taxable income.

The crunch is that if you are married with three children over the age of 18, living at home and all of the family are working then all of the family are paying for a TV licence.

Yep. And once Quantum computing takes hold, current systems will be easily hacked. Not every business will be on that bandwagon immediately. Then the millions of individuals who will still be using today’s systems.

Hey Ken,

True, but all most users need to know is that the color blue means attributes are good:

Blue = Good
Yellow = Caution
Red = Bad
Gray = Unknown

If you think that is bad, use an iPad and don’t turn on 2FA. All of a sudden, Apple forgets who you are even after you just logged back in to identify yourself. If you leave the iPad turned off for more than 4 hours, you are requested to go to settings and log in to your Apple account once again. Pressing the Home button, you can enter a Passcode to continue “logged out”. But then, you bring up an app such as messaging or Facetime, you get prompted At least 3 times to log in to your Apple account if you keep refusing . After a couple of days, the nag goes to 4-6 prompts before it finally gives in. Of course, activating 2FA makes it all go away.

Now, I know some of you readers will say what’s the big deal in turning on 2FA. Well if you don’t own a smart phone, only have a landline, don’t use a browser and e-mail, etc., just Facetime and messaging then 2FA is problematic. Yes, I know you can have the landline called and verify it was you trying to log in, but it is a PITA to go to your landline phone to wait for a call, only to pick up the phone to a “f”ing robocall that just happen to arrive ahead of the verification call. To make matters worse, “answering” that robocall ends up generating more robocalls, it seems like you go on a “sell list” as a “live one”, so even more robocalls come.

Now I know this is far from typical, but it was my situation when my wife was alive. She could not handle technology period. She was given an iPad so she could stay in contact with our children and grandchildren. She did not browse the internet or use other features – just Facetime and texting. We did not own a cell phone. Our landline only allowed local calls with no bells and whistles like caller-ID, long distance, etc. We did have a Closed Caption phone because she had hearing aids, but without caller-ID, no clue as to who was calling. Of course, part of the problem was her not wanting to give up the landline in favor of wireless or VOIP. Having experienced the occasional severe power outage, backup batteries aren’t sufficient. Also costs when you are on fixed income.

CrystalDiskInfo is a great way to check your SSD health, but a lot of that information is in hexadecimal form. You can change that into the more readable decimal view by clicking on the Function tab, then Advanced Features and scroll down to the Raw Values and change it to the DEC setting. Then all your numbers in all those rows will become somewhat more comprehensible and useful.
Hope that helps someone.

Comment on How To Correctly Diagnose RAM Problems by Reg Watson https://davescomputertips.com/how-to-correctly-diagnose-ram-problems/#comment-178722 Sun, 03 May 2026 06:14:48 +0000 https://davescomputertips.com/?p=152244#comment-178722 Thanks Marc

Given the error codes in the absence of anything else, the fact that presumably everything was working fine for some lengthy time previously and the PC wasn’t dropped or jolted recently (you would have mentioned it) and you state you managed to get all the modules working with nothing more than a remove and re-insert (no BIOS reset to defaults) I’d suggest it was either a poor contact module pin or a transient glitch (power surge, static, etc.) Only other issue could be an EXPO setting (you don’t mention if timings set or at default) that may have once worked fine on a new board and ram but as it stuff has aged the hardware may not be what it once was (aren’t we all ?) and the BIOS may benefit from a small tune down if EXPO was set.

However E3/E5 on that board suggests a DRAM detection and training initialisation issue. How hot and sticky is it there in Argentina ? I see at around this time of year can be 70-78% which is high enough to cause issues on pins so is the PC in an air-conditioned room or do you use a dehumidifier ? Anyway I suspect some slight oxidisation corrosion build-up on a module somewhere which eventually could have caused the issue with the heating and cooling when switching the PC on and off. By removing and reinserting them one at a time you likely scraped any minor corrosion away.

If me I would have probably just cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and inspected the pins closely and then run Memtest for a couple of hours or even overnight to give the modules a damn good thrashing but maybe it’s all good without the extra effort. I’d recommend backing up data often in the meantime until you are sure ! Can’t have you losing the next week’s DCT article !

I find it tedious to have to do this for each video. Tried adding a hyphen to the home page, but of course, it did not work. I do get full screen video this way, though. I like that.

It doesn’t work if you’re watching YouTube on your TV.

Brave’s built-in shields already support HTTPS only connections by default. However, if you want to strengthen that feature even more; go to Settings > Shields > Upgrade connections to HTTPS and change the default from “Standard” to “Strict”.

Safari doesn’t include a HTTPS-only setting but it does provide something similar.

Go to Settings > Safari > Security and turn on the Not Secure Connection Warning option. This will not force HTTPS only connections but it will issue a warning when you are attempting to access non-secure HTTP sites.
