I have shown him multiple times how to create these shortcuts, he&#8217;s even written down my step-by-step instructions. Even so, every time one of his desktop shortcuts mysteriously &#8221;disappears&#8221;, I have to go to his home and create a new one for him. In Windows 10, creating desktop shortcuts to installed programs, folders, and files is a relatively simple process. Here&#8217;s how:<\/p>\n<h2>Create Shortcuts To Installed Programs<\/h2>\n<p>In Windows 10, all installed programs and Apps are conveniently listed in alphabetical order down the left-hand panel of the Start menu:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/davescomputertips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/start_menu_program_list.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-98461\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/davescomputertips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/start_menu_program_list-640x348.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davescomputertips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/start_menu_program_list-640x348.jpg 640w, https:\/\/davescomputertips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/start_menu_program_list-350x190.jpg 350w, https:\/\/davescomputertips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/start_menu_program_list-150x82.jpg 150w, https:\/\/davescomputertips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/start_menu_program_list.jpg 645w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To open the Start menu &#8211;\u00a0 either left-click the Start button or press the &#8216;Windows&#8217; key on the keyboard<\/li>\n<li>Locate the listing for the program you want to create a desktop shortcut for<\/li>\n<li>Drag that entry from the Start menu to the desktop and you\u2019ll see the word \u201cLink\u201d appear when you\u2019re hovering over the desktop<\/li>\n<li>Release the mouse button to create a link to the program, aka, a desktop shortcut<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the program is within a Folder containing multiple programs &#8212; such as in the case of Microsoft Office, for example&#8211; you&#8217;ll first need to click on that Folder to expand the contents and then drag and drop the specific program onto the desktop:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/davescomputertips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/drag_and_drop_from_start_menu_to_desktop.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-98462\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/davescomputertips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/drag_and_drop_from_start_menu_to_desktop-640x282.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/davescomputertips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/drag_and_drop_from_start_menu_to_desktop-640x282.jpg 640w, https:\/\/davescomputertips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/drag_and_drop_from_start_menu_to_desktop-350x154.jpg 350w, https:\/\/davescomputertips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/drag_and_drop_from_start_menu_to_desktop-150x66.jpg 150w, https:\/\/davescomputertips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/drag_and_drop_from_start_menu_to_desktop.jpg 648w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Create Desktop Shortcut To Items In Quick Access<\/h2>\n<p>Creating a shortcut on the desktop to a specific folder listed under Quick Access &#8211;Pictures, Documents, Music, Videos, etc.&#8211; is exactly the same process as above. So all you are doing here is copying the link from Quick Access to the Desktop, which then eliminates the need to open File Explorer in order to access those links.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Create Shortcuts To Folders Or Files<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Requires the additional use of the Alt key<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Navigate to the folder or file but this time, hold down the <strong>Alt<\/strong> key on your keyboard and then drag and drop the folder or file onto your desktop in the same manner as above.
